Right Before Us

A monk asked Wei-kuan: "Where is Tao?"

Kuan: "Right before us."

Monk: "Why don't I see it?"

Kuan: "Because of your egotism, you cannot see it."

Monk: "If I cannot see it because of my egotism, does your reverence see it?"

Kuan: "As long as there is `I' and `you,' this complicates the situation and there is no seeing Tao."

Monk: "Where there is neither `I' nor `you' is it seen?"

Kuan: "When there is neither `I' nor `you,' who is here to see it?"
